Eat Good. Feel Good. Thrive.

In the year 2022 an obesity crisis in unfolding right in front of us. Millions of people across the globe are overfed but undernourished, meaning they have such easy access to food but often times it is prepackaged, calorie dense, and overly processed foods. There are two things that humans can do every day to fuel their bodies, minds, and souls- eat healthy and move your body. Surprisingly, this is easier said than done. A lot of us have this mentality that eating healthy has to be this complicated, expensive, and boring process and that is not the case! What we choose to consume day in and day out will affect your overall health. Whether it is positively or negatively, well that is up to you!

Ahhhh, spring is finally here!! I don't know if it was the gloomy weather here in Sweden, the pandemic and not wanting to go out, adjusting to life with a baby, or a combination of all three- but this winter felt really long! I don't know about you, but I feel such a shift in my mood and energy as soon as spring rolls around and the days become brighter and longer. I love seeing the flowers and trees begin to bloom, and everything just starts to feel fresh and vibrant again.  I thought in today's post I would split things up into a few categories and "springify" them. I know springify isn't a word, but you'll see what I mean as you continue reading.

I will be back :)

I know I JUST had a blog post about how I was going to be more consistent with my posts, but I have a really good reason for not having posted anything in the last couple weeks... I had a baby!!!

I still have a lot of ideas and posts to share with my Pop Nourish fam in the near future- but for the time being I am going to be focusing on my new baby girl and my journey into motherhood.

If you are interested in any pregnancy/post postpartum related posts, let me know!

I will be back soon 💛

making the switch

"The problem with all or nothing thinking is that it keeps people from even taking the first steps." -Dr. Micahel Greger

This quote is one that really stuck with me when I first began working towards my Holistic Nutritionist Certificate. It is so true, not only with eating but for many other things in life where people want to make a change, but fear ultimately holds them back. What is holding you back from becoming the healthiest version of yourself??

Lets talk about some labels, what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, and easy ways you can transform the way you eat!

what is the deal with dates?

As someone who despises raisins I find it kind of funny that I am a big fan of dates, which just look like giant raisins. I started buying dates a couple years ago when I discovered a recipe for "raw balls" which is essentially just blended dates with whatever other ingredients you choose to add! But I realized I have been eating dates for much longer thanks to Larabars, which are delicious bars made with very minimal ingredients. Dates are not an ingredient I thought about or ever had on my shopping list for majority of my life, but I am glad they are a staple in our home now! I thought I would share my current favorite way to eat dates and some fun facts that you may or may not know!

gadget essentials

Happy Friday, everyone! Going into the weekend I thought I would share a post highlighting my four most used kitchen gadgets! I think after reading this post they will become essentials in your kitchen too, if they aren't already! Of course there are bigger kitchen items such as Crock Pots, coffee machines, or blenders that make our lives easier and most people probably find essential, but today I wanted to show some love to these *in my opinion* underrated and sometimes forgotten gadgets!

back to school snack ideas

For a lot of you, August typically means back to school time! Whether your child is going to be in a classroom full time, doing a hybrid situation, or learning from home- it is important that they are being fueled with healthy and nourishing foods! The ideas I am going to give you are simple, nutritious, and 100% kid (and adult) friendly. Of course, these are just my ideas and there are a million more out there but I hope this post can help as you and your kiddos get back into a school year routine!

daily dozen

Take a moment to think about what you eat on a typical day. Do you eat nuts every day? What about fruit? Beans? I am here to tell you about the 12 things you should be aiming to consume every single day. With these foods in mind, the next time you meal plan or browse Pinterest for new recipe ideas try and challenge yourself to check off as many of these as possible! I was inspired to write this post because of Dr. Greger's book "How Not to Die" and his recommendation of the "Daily Dozen".

the immune system- your body's own little army

Let me begin this post by saying I am not a medical expert, doctor, epidemiologist, pathologist, or anything else that would have required me to take a lot of science classes in college. I am just someone with a passion for health and wellness, and doing whatever I can to best take care of myself and my family. Especially if it is as simple as being mindful of what we are eating and our lifestyle choices.

hello, remember me??

Hello! Wow... It's been a while since I last blogged! Ironically, one of my last blog posts was all about how I was going to do better at being consistent and giving my readers more content. I clearly didn't follow through with that, but I am back now and ready to roll! Let me fill you in on what has been happening in my personal life lately, and how I want to move forward with pop nourish!

the essentials

Hello! Welcome back to pop nourish. Today we are talking about essential oils! I got into essential oils a couple of years ago, and now I wonder how I lived so long without using them. I use my oils in one way or another every single day. If you have read my "about me" section here on the blog, then you already know that one of the acronyms I had in mind for pop was "power of plants", and that's where essential oils come into play! I am going to share my top 10 essential oils with you, how and why I use them, and where I get my favorite oils from.

gratitude

"“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
- Robert Brault

I woke up this morning with a heavy heart, just like many other people across the world. As I get older, I have become more aware of the fact that tragedies often prompt people to reflect on their own lives in a deeper way. In the midst of grief and sadness, a lot of us turn to the people, places, and things that bring us comfort. We find ourselves holding our loved ones closer, and being thankful for all we have. I am definitely one of those people. In my time of reflection, I realized from here on out I want to take a moment every day to reflect on the good, to be more kind to everyone I come in contact with, to not take anything or anyone for granted, and to not let negativity win.
Life is too short, and we have to make the most out of each day.

one, two, three...

If you have read the "about me" section here on pop nourish then you already know I am currently working towards my certification as a Holistic Nutritionist, and this program focuses heavily on the many benefits of a plant-based diet. A plant-based diet is one that consists of whole foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, and minimal or no animal products.

For me personally, I am strictly vegetarian but I would say I am only 85% plant-based at this point. But I don't want to get hung up on labels, because what someone chooses not to eat doesn't define their health as much as what they DO choose to eat. We all know that copious amounts of processed food is not good for you, and that fresh produce is. What you decide to put in your body day after day does have a direct effect on your health.

i'm back! happy new year!

Happy New Year! Wow, I can't believe it is 2020. I feel like I say this every year, but 2019 flew by! I know I have been slacking with posts the past couple of months, which is partially due to vacations and the holiday season but the reality of it is when I started pop nourish I had a lot of material built up and I was posting at an unmaintainable pace. When I first shared my blog publicly I wanted there to be numerous posts for my readers to enjoy. With the start of a new year, it is my goal to be fully dedicated to providing my readers with quality posts on a consistent schedule. I haven't quite figured out what I want that schedule to be, but I can promise you there won't be any more month long breaks in between blogs!

post thanksgiving reset

Hello everyone! Can you believe Thanksgiving has already come and gone? I look forward to Thanksgiving all year long and I am always a little sad when my favorite holiday is over! I had a great week with my family, and I ate all sorts of yummy foods. I usually have good self control when it comes to avoiding foods I know my body doesn't agree with (looking at you, dairy) but during all of the festivities I just couldn't stop myself. My sister in law made these amazing brie and balsamic cranberry crostini's and I could not stop eating them 😄 So, that brings me to what this blog post is all about! I don't know about you, but I definitely need to "reset" my healthy eating habits and what better time than the week following a holiday. I am going to share three days worth of breakfast, lunch, and dinner that will leave you feeling nourished, energized, and full nutrients.

cacao maca magic- energy balls

If you have seen my previous posts about healthy snack ideas and my carrot cake energy ball recipe, then you already know how much I love these little treats. The other day I was really wanting to make a chocolate energy ball, but I was too lazy to go to the store to get cocoa powder. I went and looked in my cupboard for other ingredients and when I saw a powder latte mix that I love I got inspired to try and use that in my energy ball recipe. It turned out to be the perfect ingredient and I was able to make the best chocolatey energy ball that really packs a nutritious punch.

Pantry Staple- Oils

Is it safe to assume you already have a variety of oils in your pantry? I thought so. Oils are used in so many different recipes, whether you are making a dressing, baking, oven roasting vegetables, or  sauteing something on the stove. Although this is a popular item in the kitchen, not all oils are created equally, and they each serve a different purpose. Continue reading to learn about the best oils you can chose, how to use them, and which ones you should try to minimize in your diet.
