Pantry Staple- Nut Butters

If you don't already have a jar of peanut butter or nut butter in your pantry I am going to be very surprised! Unless of course you are European and don't appreciate peanut butter the way us North Americans do 😜 I will never forget the first time I spent a summer in Denmark with Markus and it was like a scavenger hunt trying to find peanut butter for me. Anyways, besides the simple fact that nut butters are delicious and can be enjoyed anytime of day, there are some nutritional benefits as well.

It is recommended that we all having a serving of nuts or seeds daily, according to Dr. Gregor's Daily Dozen checklist. I think everyone should download the Daily Dozen app, it is a great way to keep track of all food servings that are recommended daily for optimal for health and longevity. You can easily get your daily serving of nuts and seeds by consuming 2 tablespoons of any nut butter.  If you love nut butters like me, then that is an easy accomplishment.

Benefits:
- A great source of healthy fats which is optimal for heart health, lowering cholesterol, and reducing your risk of strokes
-Plant based protein option, 2 tablespoons provides roughly 8 grams of protein
-Energy booster
-Contains zinc, magnesium, niacin, and vitamin B-6 which all promote healthy heart, brain, immunity, and energy production

Like most of my pantry staples, nut butters can be very versatile depending on your preferences. If you are allergic to peanuts, you thankfully have other options such as almond butter or cashew butter. There are tons of options on the market these days! If you want to get the most health benefits from your nut butter of choice, make sure you are reading the nutrition labels properly. If you can, try to make sure the jar you are buying is 100% peanuts or almonds or cashews, etc. I personally think it is okay if salt is added, but I definitely pass on brands that have added sugar and added oils.
If you have read any of my previous posts then you know I am a big fan of Whole Foods 365 brand, and their peanut butter is no exception! "Just peanuts, no sugar added, and a pinch of seas salt" and it is very affordable. I opt for the creamy variety, but they also have a crunchy option. Some nut butters can be a little pricey, so don't be afraid of generic brand options if you want to save some money, as long as the ingredient list is clean. If you are a Trader Joe's fan, you have to try their Mixed Nut Butter- it is drool worthy!

I can eat peanut butter on practically everything, but here are some of my favorite ways:
-on oatmeal, of course
-spread on a piece of toast or whole grain frozen waffle
-mixed into a smoothie or protein shake
-good ol' PB&J
-a dip for apples
-frozen banana, peanut butter, and dark chocolate bites
-homemade peanut sauce for stir fry dinners as great savory option

What is your favorite nut butter option and how do you best enjoy it?? Let me know!
