What is an antioxidant?
An antioxidant is a substance that protects our cells from harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radical production can be caused by diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, and pesticides. Antioxidants fight the free radicals to make sure they don't wreck havoc on our bodies. Free radicals are associated with premature aging, cancer, Alzheimer's, and other chronic illnesses- that is why it is so important to eat antioxidant rich foods.

Antioxidant rich foods:
-blueberries
-dark leafy greens; spinach, kale, collard greens
-artichokes
-pecans
-beans
-acai
-regular potatoes and sweet potatoes
-dark chocolate
-cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries
-red grapes
-tomatoes
-cinnamon
-turmeric
-walnuts
-dried fruits (all natural, no sugar added)
-a variety of tea such as green tea
-red wine and coffee also contain levels of antioxidants

Facts:
-Antioxidants may protect you against developing certain diseases, cancers, and chronic illnesses
-Antioxidant supplements aren't nearly as effective as consuming the antioxidant rich food
-Plant foods contain 64% more antioxidants than animal products
-Adding fresh herbs to a meal can nearly double the meals antioxidant levels
-Adding 1/2 tsp of cinnamon to oatmeal can raise antioxidant levels from 20 units to a 120 units
-Antioxidants can help to boost your immunity
-Vitamins A, E, C and beta-carotene are antioxidants, and can protect your brain, eyes, lungs, etc.
-Antioxidants can act as an anti-inflammatory agent
